For local lawns, particularly those with cool season turf, July through September are the most stressful months of the year. North Carolina summers bring intense heat, suffocating humidity, and little rain. This sets the perfect stage for turf fungus and drought stress. Homeowners trying to counter the lack of rain can actually make matters worse with improper watering habits. Add to that the pressure that our lawns receive from grubs, armyworms and other insects, often there’s not much of a lawn left by the end of the season.
Why Is My Lawn Brown?
Knowing whether your yard is thirsty or actively under attack by a pathogen or pest is critical. Turf suffering from drought stress will usually recover if water is received within 2 or 3 weeks of becoming dormant. Fungus and insect problems are much more time sensitive and require immediate attention.
Symptoms of Heat and Drought Stress
Drought stress shows up uniformly across a lawn rather than in isolated spots. Look for these specific visual cues:
- The Footprint Test: When you walk across the lawn, the grass blades stay flattened and do not spring back up.
- Color Shift: The turf changes from a vibrant green to a dull, bluish-gray before turning completely straw-brown.
- Blade Curling: Individual grass blades will roll or fold inward lengthwise to reduce their surface area and conserve moisture.
The Diagnostic Checklist: Stress, Fungus, or Insects?
- Look at the Pattern: Drought stress affects large, uniform areas, usually beginning with high spots, slopes, and places where extra heat is radiated. Fungus typically presents as distinctly more circular patches or rings. Insect damage creates irregular, rapidly expanding shapes.
- Examine the Grass Blade: Pull a few blades from the damaged area. If this is not an insect problem and the blade is uniformly brown or tan from top to bottom, it is drought. If the blade has spots, lesions, or a dark reddish-brown border around a tan center, it is a fungal pathogen.
- The Tug Test: Gently pull on the brown grass. If it pulls up effortlessly like a piece of carpet with no roots attached, you likely have a white grub infestation.
- The Soap Test: Mix three tablespoons of liquid dish soap into one gallon of water and pour it over a three square foot area along the edge of where the turf is damaged. If you have an armyworm infestation, they’ll come to the surface within a few minutes.
The Science Behind the “Sauna Effect”
Fungal spores exist naturally in soil, remaining dormant until environmental conditions trigger their growth. Lawn fungus thrives in high temperatures with prolonged moisture. When a lawn is watered in the late afternoon or early evening, that water can sit on the leaf tissue and upper soil layer for several hours. During hot, humid weather, this creates a literal “sauna effect” at the soil level. This activates destructive pathogens, allowing them to rapidly infect and destroy healthy grass tissue overnight.
The Golden Rules of Professional Irrigation
To keep your turf fully hydrated without accidentally feeding soil pathogens, implement these precise irrigation rules:
Water at Dawn, Never at Dusk:
Schedule your irrigation system to run strictly between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM. This timing ensures that the rising sun quickly dries the grass blades, while also giving more water enough time to soak deep into the soil before evaporating.
Water Deeply and Infrequently:
Avoid watering every day in short cycles. Frequent, shallow watering creates weak, shallow root systems and constant surface moisture. Instead, apply 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, split into two heavy irrigation cycles. We recommend watering the day after mowing and then again three days after that, and to skip irrigation cycles when there has been sufficient rain.
Allow the Surface to Dry:
The top layer of soil must dry completely between watering cycles. This slows fungal development while forcing your turf’s roots to grow deeper into the soil profile to find water, making the lawn naturally more drought-resistant.
Turf Fungus Diseases in North Carolina
There are many types of fungal disease which threaten the health of both cool and warm season grasses. While none are desirable, some are more common than others, with some causing more damage than others. Here in Union County, the most common, highly destructive ones are Brown Patch, Summer Patch, Large Patch and Dollar Spot:
Tall Fescue & Kentucky Blue Grass (Cool-Season Turf): Susceptible to Brown Patch and Summer Patch. These fungi create rapidly expanding, circular patches of dead grass.
Bermuda & Zoysia (Warm-Season Turf): Susceptible to Dollar Spot or Large Patch, which weaken the root systems and ruin turf density.
Proactive Prevention vs. Cure and Repair
Adjusting your irrigation habits is essential, but the natural heat and humidity of a North Carolina summer will often cause fungus problems even when the lawn has been watered properly. Non-irrigated lawns are also susceptible. Once fungal damage is visible, the grass blade will not heal. If caught very early, curative fungicide treatments may prevent widespread damage, but in most cases some amount of visible damage will have already occurred. This will require either repairing the damage or waiting for the autumn overseeding of cool season lawns. Warm season turf has amazing self-repairing abilities, but the time it’ll take to recover depends on how large the damaged areas are. Some repair may still be required. Preventative fungicide treatments form a protective barrier around the grass tissue and upper soil layer that help stop spores from germinating, giving both cool-season and warm-season lawns a better chance of surviving the summer.
